Clinical Practice Session
Conservative Kidney Management and Palliative Care across the Lifespan: When Less Is More
October 26, 2024 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Ballroom 20D, Convention Center
Session Description
Kidney diseases impose substantial burdens on patients and families, especially those of children. Symptom burden can be profound and insufficiently addressed during clinical encounters. Initiation of dialysis does not always align with the priorities of patients with advanced CKD or AKI, especially in those with limited life expectancy. This session addresses the implementation of palliative care in nephrology practice for both adults and children.
Learning Objective(s)
- Describe the role of nondialytic management of advanced CKD in patients with limited life expectancy
- Explain how to incorporate palliative care approaches in pediatric nephrology practice
- Discuss dialysis decision-making and time-limited trials of dialysis for appropriately selected patients with advanced CKD or AKI
- Formulate approaches to assessing and managing symptom burden in patients with advanced CKD
Learning Pathway(s)
- Geriatric Nephrology
- Pediatric Nephrology
