The William E. Mitch, III, MD, FASN, International Scholars Program improves the training experience of nephrology fellows in Central and South America as well as Spanish-speaking countries in North America by providing free ASN membership for up to two years. In addition to free ASN membership, the program offers an opportunity to receive travel support to attend the 2024 ASN Annual Meeting during Kidney Week. Please note this program is in person. By accepting a spot in this program, participants agree to abide by all Health and Safety protocols as set forth by ASN.
Established in 2012, this program is named after former ASN President and recipient of the distinguished John P. Peters Award, William E. Mitch, III, MD, FASN. Dr. Mitch is committed to helping develop meaningful programs for the next generation of nephrologists, to improving the educational continuum for nephrologists in Latin America, and to making ASN's initiatives more accessible throughout the Americas.
Benefits for Travel Support Recipients
The ASN William E. Mitch, III, MD, FASN International Scholars Travel Support Program:
- Provides free registration to the Annual Meeting at ASN Kidney Week 2024 and $1,500 USD in travel support to five Mitch International Scholars.
- Provides free registration to the Annual Meeting at ASN Kidney Week 2024 and $1,500 USD in travel support to three nephrology fellows from US and Canadian training programs who have experienced personal or family hardship that has affected the need for financial assistance .
Eligibility
The ASN William E. Mitch, III, MD, FASN International Scholars Program and travel support opportunity is available to ASN members who are nephrology fellows located in Central and South America as well as Spanish-speaking countries in North America.
The three additional nephrology fellows must be individuals who have experienced personal or family hardship and be from US or Canadian training programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Application
To apply, a candidate must:
- Log into the application using an ASN ID.
- Complete applicant information, demographics, training level, etc.
- Complete a 200-word essay. Applicants from US or Canadian training programs accredited by ACGME must demonstrate, in their essay, how they have overcome personal or family hardship.
- Upload a CV.
A CV must be submitted as part of the online application. Applications received without CVs will not be processed.

NOTE: Travel support applicants may apply to any and all travel support opportunities (if eligible); however, only one award will be given per person. All applicants will be notified within seven weeks of the application deadline.
