Educational Symposium
Hyperkalemia, CKD, and Heart Failure: Dietary and Medical Considerations
October 24, 2024 | 12:45 PM - 01:45 PM
Location: Marriott Grand Ballroom 5, Marriott Marquis
Session Description
Hyperkalemia is common in patients with CKD and heart failure and is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Patients with CKD often have inherent hyperkalemic tendencies, and the optimization of medications that slow disease progression often causes hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia is frequently treated by low potassium diets despite data that suggest they may be ineffective and show health benefits of potassium-containing foods. This symposium reviews hyperkalemia in patients with CKD and heart failure and discusses management to optimize medical therapy for these conditions while allowing for healthy, potassium-containing diets.
Support is provided by an educational grant from AstraZeneca.
