Green Nephrology: Innovations That Address the Carbon Footprint Conundrum in Dialysis
October 24, 2024 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Room 8, Convention Center
Session Description
The carbon footprint that occurs in caring for patients with kidney diseases, especially those on dialysis, is substantial, and its negative effects are creating a growing health threat that directly affects patients internationally. This session presents the current impact that dialysis has on the environment and the innovative solutions, both technological and strategic, that are needed to reduce the carbon footprint. With a goal of sustainability in the future, the information in this session adds to a growing road map that will help guide the nephrology community.
ASN thanks the ASN Health Care Justice Committee for assistance with this session.
Learning Objective(s)
- Describe the environmental impact of the care of patients with kidney diseases
- Discuss the current carbon footprint for dialysis care and identify ways in which it can be managed and reduced, especially as it pertains to water consumption
- Identify new technologies that can have a positive impact on the global environment, spur low-resource dialysis management, and support overall kidney care
- Summarize ways to care for dialysis recipients during times of limited resources and natural disasters
- Outline ways to promote green nephrology initiatives at local, national, and international levels
Learning Pathway(s)
- Dialysis
- CKD Non-Dialysis
