Basic/Clinical Science Session

Renal and Extrarenal Sodium Handling in Blood Pressure Regulation, Including the Robert W. Schrier, MD, Endowed Lectureship

October 24, 2024 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Room 5, Convention Center

Session Description

Sodium and electrolyte handling by the kidneys has been extensively studied in the context of BP regulation and hypertension. This session highlights recent studies indicating involvement of extrarenal sodium transport in BP regulation.

ASN gratefully acknowledges Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Novartis, Astellas Pharma US, and several individuals for support of the Schrier Endowed Lectureship.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Describe the role of extrarenal epithelial sodium channels in BP regulation
  • Explain the interaction of renal and extrarenal electrolyte transport in kidney diseases
  • Discuss potential therapeutic options for targeting extrarenal sodium transport in hypertension

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Hypertension and Cardiorenal Disorders
  • Fluid‚ Electrolyte‚ and Acid-Base Disorders
