Derek was an exceptional individual who devoted himself to advancing kidney health and patient advocacy. He was a beloved member of our community and an active participant in various organizations and initiatives, leaving an indelible imprint on the landscape of kidney health.
Derek's unwavering commitment to the Kidney Health Initiative's Patient Family Partnership Council showcased his deep-seated passion for kidney health. As a cherished member of this council, he tirelessly championed the voices and perspectives of patients and their families, ensuring they were heard and considered in all realms of kidney health research, policy, and care. His unparalleled dedication to this cause and his invaluable insights shaped the future of kidney health.
Derek's expertise extended far beyond his involvement with the Kidney Health Initiative. He was a trusted consultant to esteemed institutions such as the University of North Carolina Kidney Center, CareDX, Ardelyx Inc. Scientific Advisory Board, and Responsum. Through these advisory roles, he showcased his profound knowledge and understanding of the field, playing a pivotal role in guiding crucial decisions and strategies in kidney health.
Moreover, Derek's impact reverberated across numerous organizations. He held various positions within the National Kidney Foundation, ASN KidneyX, the Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG) ESRD Network #17, the UCSF Kidney Project, and the National Forum of ESRD Networks' Kidney Patient Advisory Committee. His leadership and advisory roles within these organizations underscored his unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of kidney patients and advocating for their needs.
Derek's dedication transcended borders, as he also actively engaged in international initiatives. As a patient advisor, he collaborated with the SONG Group, the European Association for Dialysis, Arbor Research, and Unity Health Toronto. Derek fostered global collaboration through these partnerships and worked towards innovative solutions to improve kidney health worldwide.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Derek embodied strength and resilience. His unwavering determination and positive spirit served as an inspiration to those around him. He willingly volunteered as a regional leader for the NKF's Kidney Advocacy, advocating for policies that would positively impact the kidney community. Derek was a loving father, grandfather, brother, nephew, mentor, coach, and teacher to many who crossed his path—a friend to many, a stranger to none. Derek's unwavering commitment to making a difference will forever be remembered throughout the work of the Kidney Health Initiative's Patient Family Partnership Council.
