William Luke Whittier, MD, FASN, BRCU Faculty

Dr. Whittier is a Professor of Medicine at Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Nephrology. He currently serves as the Director of the ASN Board Review Course and Update and serves on the ASN Continuous Professional Development Committee as well as the chairperson for the PNT committee at RUMC. He is actively involved in peer education as faculty at RUMC but also in the international GlomCon fellowship and through the live-streamed RUMC biopsy conference.
His early research on outcomes after percutaneous kidney biopsy helped develop standardized best practices for this procedure, which he has disseminated in publications, hands-on seminars, and an instructional video. His current research focuses on this but also the classification and treatment of lupus nephritis, and he is the site principal investigator for clinical trials investigating novel agents in this disease. His other research and clinical interests include kidney stone prevention, glomerular disease, and acid-base disorders. This work has earned him a designation by his colleagues for Chicago Magazine?s Top Doctors for multiple consecutive years. His honors and awards include induction into Alpha Omega Alpha Society, multiple RUMC Teaching and Service Awards, distinguished honor for Top 10 AJKD blog and vlog posts for several years, and most recently was nominated for the Larry Goodman Leadership Award on Founder?s Day at RUMC.
You can often find him on the wards or in the dialysis unit mentoring future nephrologists- when he?s not on the golf course.
