Thank you for your advocacy on behalf of the more than 37 million Americans living with kidney diseases. A kidney transplant is the optimal therapy for patients living with kidney failure, but the number of patients waiting for a kidney transplant far outpaces available kidneys from donors. Every day 13 Americans die while waiting for kidney transplant. Although transplants in the U.S. have reached record numbers, the number of living donors has remained stagnant and economic barriers often inhibit potential living organ donors. Living donors experience approximately thousands of dollars in out of pocket costs due to travel, lodging, and other nonmedical expenses. Congress must remove barriers facing living donors to create fiscal security throughout the donation process for potential donors.
The Living Organ Donor Tax Credit Act H.R. 6171 will establish an up-to $5,000 one-time refundable tax credit for living organ donors who were not reimbursed for the costs related to organ donation by the National Living Organ Donor Assistance Center (NLDAC) or any other entity. This new tax credit will remove financial barriers facing many Americans who donate a kidney.
