ESRD Bundled Payment System
CMS Releases Final ESRD Rule and Proposed Quality Rule
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the Final End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System Rule on Monday, July 26, 2010. The ASN Public Policy Board, ESRD Task Force, and staff are reviewing the rule and will soon release a detailed summary. Also on July 26, CMS released a proposed rule on the Quality Improvement Program (QIP), one of the first pay-for-performance programs in Medicare. ASN will provide an analysis of this proposed rule in the coming days.
ASN Comments on ESRD Bundled Payment Proposed Rule
Given the unprecedented importance of this CMS regulation, and the likelihood that it will have monumental effect on care of patients with renal disease and on the practice of nephrology nationwide, the Society created an ESRD Task Force to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Proposed Rule and craft a comment letter to CMS.

GAO Reports on Bundled Payments
ESRD Proposed Rule Resources
Under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) of 2008, Congress required that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) begin to provide one "bundled" payment for dialysis care and drugs. In September 2009, CMS proposed how it may implement this new payment system in the ESRD Bundled Payment System Proposed Rule.
