This podcast references the ASN Online Geriatric Nephrology Curriculum. This online text, the first of its kind, is based on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME)'s six core competences of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. The ASN online curriculum serves as a primary source of educational material for nephrology training programs nationwide.

For more information about the curriculum, the Society's efforts related to geriatric nephrology, or ASN, please contact ASN Senior Policy Coordinator Susan Owens at sowens@asn-online.org.

An Apple a Day Keeps Kidney Stones Away (August 10, 2009)

Researchers have found another reason to eat well: a healthy diet helps prevent kidney stones. Loading up on fruits, vegetables, nuts, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains, while limiting salt, red and processed meats, and sweetened beverages is an effective way to ward off kidney stones. Because kidney stones are linked to higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, increased body weight, and other risk factors for heart disease, the findings have considerable health implications.

Mars and Venus: Short- and Long-Term Success of Male to Female Kidney Transplants (July 29, 2009)

Female recipients of kidneys from deceased male donors demonstrate an increased risk of allograft failure in the first year after transplant, but show no increased risk after ten years. The study authors note that proteins on male donor cells may affect the short term success of kidney transplants in women.

New Statistical Method Shows Importance of Dialysis Dose (July 23, 2009)

A new approach to statistical analysis may be better suited to study the relationship between higher "dose" of dialysis and survival time for patients with advanced kidney disease.

Chronic Kidney Disease Profoundly Impacts Quality of Life (July 24, 2009)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can significantly lessen patients'quality of life. Certain types of patients—women, diabetics, and those with a history of heart complications—are most affected. These findings indicate that medical care for CKD patients should include strategies to lessen the negative impact of CKD on quality of life.

Fresh Meats Often Contain Additives Harmful to Kidney Disease Patients (July 16, 2009)

Uncooked meat products enhanced with food additives may contain high levels of phosphorous and potassium that are not discernable from inspection of food labels. This can make it difficult for people to limit dietary phosphorous and potassium that at high levels are harmful to kidney disease patients.
