Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), due to its ability to provide effective volume and metabolic control, has recently emerged as the dialysis technique of choice for critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). Obstacles to the widespread use of CRRT include limited understanding of its application and lack of familiarity with its technical features. In this symposium we review the impact of AKI in critical illness. We will discuss the fundamentals of CRRT and describe in-depth how to implement a hassle-free protocol from the perspective of the physician, pharmacist, and nurse. This symposium is open to nephrology and pulmonary/critical care fellows, clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and anyone interested in obtaining a practical understanding of CRRT.
