Board Review Course

Preliminary Information

Accreditation and CME Credit Designation

The American Society of Nephrology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The ASN designates this educational activity for a maximum of 64 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

A Prescription for Success (Needs Assessment)

The timing of the ASN Board Review Course & Update (BRCU) in late August maximizes attendees' readiness for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Nephrology Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification Examinations, November 24, 2008 (also May 12, 2009 for recertification only). After completion of the course and the self-assessment test, participants have nearly three full months to fill in any newly discovered gaps in their knowledge. This course provides a timely, comprehensive, and thorough update for the practicing nephrologist.

Educational Objectives

This weeklong, in-depth review of general nephrology, hypertension, and transplantation is designed to meet the following objectives:

1. Prepare attendees to pass the 2008 Nephrology Board Certification or Maintenance of Certification Examinations.

2. Translate the results of case studies into practical strategies to improve patient care.

Who Should Attend?

Senior Nephrologists: Practicing nephrologists are updated in all key areas of the specialty. We welcome Pediatric Nephrologists, Intensivists, and Hospitalists.

Board Examination: This course fully prepares attendees for upcoming Certification and Maintenance of Certification exams.

Renal Fellows: Fellows receive a detailed outline and discussion of what their current fellowship program should include.

Fellowship in ASN: The 64 CME credit hours earned at the BRCU approaches the 70 hours/yr required to qualify or sustain FASN status.

Format

Lectures, interactive workshops, panel and case discussions, and Q & A sessions are integral parts of the 2008 BRCU program. Relevant physiology and pathophysiology are blended with clinical discussions aimed at reviewing, updating, and preparing for the 2008 Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification Examinations.

Faculty

The ASN has selected internationally renowned speakers for their expert teaching skills and highly rated past performances in this and similar courses. To ensure fresh delivery and new points of view, we turn over approximately one-third of our faculty each year.

Syllabus

Participants receive a comprehensive syllabus containing outlines of lectures, explanatory text, copies of key slides, and updated bibliographies. Also included is a color CD ROM of Dr. Helmut Rennke’s session "Pathology of the Glomerulonephritides."

Workshops

Breakfast and Midday Workshops: Included in the registration fee, the ASN offers 12 workshops designed to supplement the main program. Workshops are offered in the early morning and at midday. A continental breakfast is offered to all and an optional lunch can be provided at modest cost. Select those workshops you wish to attend when you register for the course.

Official Symposia

We invite you to join us Sunday evening, August 24, and Tuesday evening, August 26, for two Official Dinner Symposia. These special dinner programs are open to all meeting registrants at no additional cost.

Final Examination

Included with your ASN Board Review Course & Update Syllabus, a practice “Final Examination” is provided to all meeting participants. You will enter your answers to the exam on ASN’s Online CME Center, which you access through the ASN website at www.asn-online.org. Your score and the correct answers will be shown to you upon completion of the online exam. The scores are private and not accessible to others.

Book Publishers

The ASN is please to inform you that we have invited book publishers to be available during the BRCU. They offer many reference books and study guides (at discounted prices) that may help prepare attendees for upcoming Certification and Maintenance of Certification exams.
